Kevin Durand (pictured right) and Jay Baruchel (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) have joined the cast of David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis. The two additions round out a packed ensemble that already includes Robert Pattinson, Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche, Samantha Morton, and Mathieu Amalric.
According to Variety, Durand will play Torval, chief of security for multibillionaire asset manager Eric Packer (Pattinson) whose rolling office is lined with monitors, tickers, and various other by-the-minute devices that allow Packer to bet heavily (his impossibly large fortune) against the yen on a crawling, chaotic trip through the city.
Baruchel will play Shiner, Packer’s “small, boy-faced” chief of technology that has been with the financial wunderkind since the beginning. It’s a small, two-scene role, but a coup for young Baruchel.
Binoche will play Didi Fancher, Packer’s fine art consultant and one of the pit stops on Packer’s trek to the barbershop. Morton is set as his new wife, Elise. Giamatti plays one of Packer’s stalkers and Amalric is Andre, a “pastry assassin” that pies Packer in the face.
I took a drubbing from Pattinson fanatics in January when I wrote the “unorthodox, high-minded project” is sure to “soar right over the heads” of some of his younger, ardent fans. Luckily, Pattinson confirmed this to Empire, calling the script “insane and difficult.” There’s nothing wrong with a solid challenge (for both Pattinson and his followers), but this will be his first production after completing work on the Twilight saga, and it’s a heady one.
