Sony and director Marc Webb are fleshing out the remaining cast members for their (still) untitled Spider-Man reboot as production gets underway this month, which brings the announcement of a surprising second villain.
Rhys Ifans is already playing the doctor-turned-reptile villain The Lizard, but joining the cast and the reign of terror is Irran Khan (pictured right), best known for his roles in Slumdog Millionaire and The Darjeeling Limited. Khan is reportedly playing a character named Van Atter.
While there isn’t an Atter in Spider-Man comic book mythology, there is a Nels Van Adder, a test subject for an experimental chemical that turned him into a uncontrollable red demon called Proto-Goblin. The character is a relatively minor villain in the Spidey universe, but serves as a precursor to Norman Osborn’s transformation into Green Goblin (as seen in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man). Proto-Goblin is pure speculation at this point, but the name coincidence seems solid enough. Given George Stacy’s involvement in the narrative somehow (Denis Leary is set to play him), one can assume they’ll pick up the storyline where an enraged Adder/Proto-Goblin attacks the police captain in a fateful altercation.
Annie Parisse, who appeared in a few episodes of AMC’s cancelled series “Rubicon,” will play Khan’s wife. THR also reports Campbell Scott and Julianne Nicholson are in negotiations to play the parents of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), though it’s unclear if they’ll be shown in flashbacks since Parker is an orphaned at an early age.
Emma Stone is set as Gwen Stacy, Parker’s love interest. The young actress, a natural blonde famous for being redheaded, recently unveiled her freshly-dyed blonde locks on the red carpet Sunday for Trevor Live. Just Jared snapped a few pictures, but here’s a look at her new look:
