Alice EveBritish actors Luke Evans and Alice Eve have joined the cast of James McTeigue’s Edgar Allen Poe thriller The Raven alongside star John Cusack.

The script, by Hannah Shakespeare and Ben Livingston, is a fictional take on the mystery surrounding the last drunken, delirious days of Poe (Cusack) in October 1849 before he died at the age of 40.  When a serial killer begins to mimic Poe’s work in his grisly murders, a young detective (Evans) enlists the help of the gothic poet to hunt down the killer and rescue Poe’s fiance (Eve), reports the Hollywood Reporter.

Jeremy Renner was originally in negotiations to play the detective, but his deal fell through.  The Hurt Locker actor is suddenly flush with offers after his Oscar-nominated turn and recently opted to co-star in Mission: Impossible 4 with Tom Cruise.

But this gives Evans another high-profile project in his meteoric rise to stardom.  The 31-year-old actor made the leap from stage to screen this year in such Hollywood blockbusters as Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood, plus he’s playing Zeus in Tarsem Singh’s Immortals and Aramis in Paul W.S. Anderon’s The Three Musketeers.  His most recent film, Tamara Drewe, is currently in theaters.  In short, you’ll be seeing a lot more of Evans.

Eve was in She’s Out of My League and was recently passed over for the female lead in Captain America.  She’s currently filming ATM, another claustrophobic thriller from Buried screenwriter Chris Sparling.

Shooting starts next month in Budapest.
