Universal Pictures and director Peter Berg have signed Taylor Kitsch to star in Battleship, a live-action adaptation of the peg-based Hasbro board game.
Berg’s sea-faring adventure will center on a clash between a fleet of warships and water-bound aliens called “The Regents.” Kitsch, who broke out in movies as Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and is starring in Disney’s John Carter of Mars, is playing a Naval commander named Alex Hopper described as “wildly spirited” and “a great seaman but a lousy politician.”
Jon and Erich Hoeber (Whiteout) wrote the script.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s article also mentions The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner, who was up for the lead before Kitsch. Their blurb reads, “[Renner] had to decide between this movie and Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest drama, with scheduling conflicts preventing his involvement in both.“
Updated: Essentially Renner was forced to choose between the lead in a big-budget board game movie or a role in Anderson’s more serious cult film, which we already knew in February. Renner passed on Berg’s naval adventure and Kitsch was cast instead. This leaves Anderson’s film and you can read my review of his brilliant script right here.
