Robert De Niro has signed on to the cast of Edge of Darkness, the comeback movie for Mel Gibson after a six year acting hiatus.

Gibson will topline as a homicide detective and a single father who uncovers a corporate cover-up and government conspiracy after his daughter’s murder. De Niro will play an operative sent to clean up the evidence.

The movie is an adaptation of the 1985 BBC six-hour series directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), who will direct here too.

Gibson is a solid actor and I’m ready to see him back on screen, despite his public persona. Oh, and De Niro is pretty good too.

But if this pairing was in the 90s, I might be really excited. Now it’s 2008. De Niro is making some pretty terrible movies recently. Gibson hasn’t acted in six years and even those weren’t top quality. Let’s just hope they were both waiting for the right script.

Shooting starts this month in Massachusetts.
