The Weinstein Company announced today that Kate Hudson will join the cast of Nine, a musical from director Rob Marshall (Chicago).

The film also stars Oscar winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench, plus Oscar nominee Penelope Cruz. Wow, every single actor or director has been nominated for an Academy Award.

Day-Lewis replaced Javier Bardem when he left the project due to “exhaustion.” He’ll play film director Guido Contini as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life. It’s inspired and based on the life of Federico Fellini (8 1/2).

Rob Marshall said this about Hudson: “It’s wonderful having Kate join this extraordinary cast! Her revelatory skills as a singer and a dancer lead to the creation of the role of “Stephanie,” a fashion reporter from Vogue working in Italy. An exciting new song, written by our composer Maury Yeston, has been added for her as well.”

It will be interesting to see her do serious work again considering we’ve only seen romantic comedy fluff from her since she was nominated in 2001.

Nine is an adaptation of the Award-winning Broadway musical. It begins shooting in October for a possible December 2009 release.
