Guillermo del Toro has said he wanted Sir Ian McKellen to return as Gandalf for the two new Hobbit movies, but there hadn’t been any official word yet.

But Empire went right to the man himself. When they asked him the important question every fan wants to know, he said:

“Yes, it’s true. I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it’s not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf.”

If you’re worried about the age difference along the timeline, Gandalf is supposed to be thousands of years old.  So a couple of decades isn’t going to make his beard any less gray.

Since the script isn’t written yet, we don’t really know who else might be back or exactly how they’re going to stretch the story over two movies.  The rumor is the first movie is the Hobbit and the second is the time between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.

Expected to return, but still unconfirmed, is Andy Serkis who played Smeagol/Gollum.
