Actor Wesley Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison and fined up to $5 million Thursday for evading federal income taxes.

Snipes was acquitted of the felony conspiracy charges by a jury in February, but found guilty of three misdemeanor counts of “failure to file federal income tax returns” by a judge.

“The fact that Snipes was acquitted on two felony charges and convicted ‘only’ on three misdemeanor counts has been portrayed in the mainstream media as a ‘victory’ for Snipes,” the government document says. So the judge gave him the maximum sentence allowable, three years behind bars.

According to the prosecution, Snipes re-routed millions of dollars to accounts in Switzerland, Antigua and the Isle of Man to avoid taxes. They estimate he has avoided around $15 million in income taxes and cheated the government out of $41 million, according to CNN.

First Swayze gets the bad news. Now Snipes? I guess that sequel planned for To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar is out of the question. And that’s the biggest loss of all.
