“We’ve got our script on and a director we’re about to attach. We’ll hopefully make that early next year for the summer of 2010,” said Godfrey.
There you have it. Whether anyone wants it or not, a Gears of War movie is headed to theaters based on the popular console game of 2007 (GoW2 is scheduled for November 2008). They “got their script on” and everything.
The project was licensed by New Line in March 2007, but with Warner Bros gobbling them up, its future was in the air. With a summer 2010 target and an inevitable special effects budget, there should be some director and casting announcements fairly soon.
At some point there will be a good video game movie. It’s bound to happen. You try enough times and eventually you’ll get lucky, a philosophy that works for some in bars downtown.
But this isn’t that movie. The video game has zero plot. There isn’t a story to be adapted. The game consists of flattening your character’s back against a wall and leaning out to unleash a barrage of bullets. If you can make a full-length movie out of that interesting, you’re something of a deity.
