Mickey Rourke has replaced Nicolas Cage on Darren Aronofsky‘s The Wrestler, according to Variety.

Cage and Aronofsky were spotted recently at an independent wrestling event doing research for the movie, but it looks like they’ve decided its not the best fit.

Rourke is probably the better person to step into the role of a wrestler. I didn’t see Cage body slamming anyone. Mickey even stopped acting for a while to try boxing.

I’m a big fan of Aronofsky, so I’m interested to see if he “sold out” with Wrestler or if he’ll stick to the regular mind bending arthouse style we’re used to. His films include The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream, and Pi. He’s also working on The Fighter with Brad Pitt and Mark Wahlberg.

Here’s this movie’s synopsis:
The film centers on Randy “The Ram” Robinson, a 1980s-era star pro wrestler who has become a burnt-out shell of his former self. After he has a heart attack during a small-time match, a doctor tells him he could die if he fights again.

In an effort to build a new life, Robinson takes a job at a deli, moves in with an aging stripper and tries to build a relationship with her son. But the prospect of a rematch with his old nemesis the Ayatollah proves too tempting to resist, even if it means risking his life.
