IGN confirmed that the writer for the Silver Surfer spin-off movie will be J. Michael Straczynski. Um, apparently he created the show Babylon 5? Maybe I’m not as much of a nerd as I thought I was, because I have no idea who that is and I never watched that show. Ever.

He had a few things to say for fans of the Marvel comic book hero, which mostly sounded like apologies for the recent not-even-close-to-Fantastic Four.

Of course, the main problem comic book geeks and critics had with the surfer’s movie debut was Galactus appearing simply as a storm cloud. He immediately addresses that, and will most likely have to answer to that until the movie’s release in 2009.

“I thought it was all they could do in the course of that movie, but in the second movie, you will see more of him.” He went on to say, “You don’t want to sort of blow out something that big and massive for one quick shot in the first movie… Where you’re showing the origin of the Surfer, that’s where you do it; that’s where you blow it out.”

The spin-off will pick up where FF4:2 left off and then go back to explain his origin story. Hopefully they don’t get Laurence Fishburne to do the voice again. What a bad idea that was.

No word yet on the director, since the project is still being written, but there have been rumors already that Alex Proyas is in talks. He made I, Robot, The Crow, and the under appreciated Dark City, so he could be a worthy savior for an idea that’s already starting off on the wrong foot.
