Walton Goggins, best known for his supporting role on FX’s “The Shield” and “Justified,” has joined the cast of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the second installment in Paramount’s toy-to-movie franchise.
Variety reports Goggins will fill the role of Warden Nigel James in the sequel’s cast, which includes returning cast members Channing Tatum, Ray Park, and Byung Hun-Lee plus newcomers Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a The Rock), Ray Stevenson, RZA and Adrianne Palicki. Bruce Willis is still in talks to play General Joe Colton, a character based on the original toy.
Goggins has scored several roles since proving he was the best thing about “The Shield,” including a spot in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming biopic Lincoln and a piece of the Predators ensemble. We won’t pretend a warden role in a G.I. Joe follow-up will be much of a challenge, but it’s still nice to see director Jon Chu assembling a rather solid group.
Johnson has been tweeting his excitement during pre-production for the movie (weapons training, pictures of his cast members, etc), but today he posted an image of himself in costume as Roadblock during the first day of shooting. Take a look:
