Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, has joined Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon as the voice of Sentinel Prime, the transformer who lead the Autobots before Optimus Prime.
If you can make out his features in the garble of CGI to the right, Sentinel Prime was featured in both the teaser and Super Bowl trailer and will likely play an integral role in the third, lunar-connected installment. In Earth, he takes the shape of a firetruck, which should come in handy if Bay packs as many explosions as per usual.
80-year-old Nimoy announced his retirement from acting last April after the release of J.J. Abram’s Star Trek in which he reprised his iconic role as Spock. Nimoy voiced Galvatron in 1986′s cartoon Transformers: The Movie.
Since voice casting for the original began back in 2006, Bay has been careful to appease his geek fan base. He cast Peter Cullen as Optimus after his stint playing the character on the cartoon TV series. Bay also chose Lord of the Rings and Matrix star Hugo Weaving as Megatron. Even Candyman actor Tony Todd voiced The Fallen in the sequel. It’s ridiculous to think that Nimoy’s contribution could be enough to reverse expectations for this one, but it’s still a perfect pick nonetheless.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens in 3D on July 1, 2011. Here are three promotional stills courtesy of MTV. Action, explosions, and blow-up dolls:
