With Henry Cavill officially locked to play Clark Kent in Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man of Steel, the perpetual speculation machine turns its attention to his love interest, Lois Lane.
Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Olivia Wilde, Rachel McAdams, Mila Kunis, and “Glee” actress Dianna Agron are all rumored to be in the running to play the tenacious reporter and frequent damsel in distress, according to Whats Playing.
Additionally, the New York Daily News confirmed Twilight star Kristen Stewart not only was considered for the role, but already passed on the opportunity during a meeting with Snyder and his producing partner/wife, Deborah Snyder. She did not read or test for the part, nor was an offer extended.
Stewart may not have been the right fit for the role any way due to her age, but particularly since Lane is typically depicted as a strong-willed personality and the 20-year-old actress tends to be more passive, on screen and off. The article points out Stewart’s media shyness as another reason for her inability to play the intrepid reporter. Having interviewed her myself, she is, admittedly, awkward but also entirely receptive to appropriate questioning (e.g. not asking about a private relationship with Robert Pattinson). Stewart’s primary focus is on indies, so she isn’t likely to accept a franchise leading lady immediately after wrapping the final installments of the Twilight saga. However, for those keeping track, she is still considering the fairy tale re-imagining Snow White and the Huntsman with Charlize Theron and Viggo Mortensen.
As for the remaining crop of talent, I personally favor the feisty, coy types like McAdams and Kunis over the stunning looks of Biel, who played the sexy love interest in The A-Team, and Akerman, who worked with Snyder on Watchmen. Agron, who I like despite her singing and dancing origins, is at a disadvantage due to her inexperience and relative age (24) to Cavill and the other, older actresses. Wilde falls somewhere in between, a ravishing beauty whose roles of late have been tough, headstrong heroines like Quorra in Tron: Legacy, her role on “House,” and her upcoming part in Cowboys & Aliens. For me, it’s McAdams.
Who is your pick to play Lois Lane?
