Ghostbusters 3 to Shoot Next Spring?

GhostbustersGhostbusters III may finally be stepping in front of the cameras next May, according to Production Weekly.  Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two, will produce and helm the third, which intends to bring back the original foursome of Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, plus Sigourney Weaver and maybe even the retired Rick Moranis.

The sequel has been plagued by conflicting reports, so it’s impossible to know what to believe anymore.  Aykroyd told Vanity Fair he was taking the script by “The Office” writers Gene Stupnisk and Lee Eisenberg and working on with Ramis.  Then FilmDrunk learned Aykroyd was merely providing his input, not rewriting anything.  Then, just to cross the streams even more, an Italian Ghostbusters website heard the script was approved by Sony.

The story will involve the “passing of the torch” from the old and busted ‘Busters to a new team, and Oscar (Dana Barret’s child in Ghostbusters II) will strap on a proton pack.

A May 2011 start date would mean the movie could be ready for a late 2012 release, possibly in time for the holidays two years from now.  But I wouldn’t hold your breath.
