In March, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros officially announced they were bringing Godzilla back to the screen and were targeting a 2012 release.
Other than some concept art unleashed at Comic-Con in July, there hasn’t been much movement on the giant lizard.
BleedingCool picked up on a video from the 3D Summit last week where producer Brian Rogers was a panelist. Speaking with Zennie Abraham, Rogers confirmed they are working towards a 2012 release and Godzilla will be projected in digital 3D. However, no director is attached yet.
He also said negotiations with Japan’s Toho Co. began in 2007 and Legendary became involved later, due to their impressive work on such genre films as 300 and the reboot of the Batman franchise.
Rogers added, “I think I can safely say there will be other monster, or monsters, that Godzilla will fight. I think traditionally those are the kind of situations that the fan base wants to see. I think the original Sony version, in my opinion, not having another monster that they were fighting was a drawback more than an asset. Just having Godzilla fight the U.S. army and everything was not the same kind of spirit of the character.”
This should be music to Godzilla fans’ ears and it sounds like, with Rogers on board, the reboot of the creature is in good hands. What do you think about it going head to head with another monster, and which one would you like to see?
