Hot on the heels of Resident Evil: Afterlife‘s number one, record-breaking opening, series star Milla Jovovich is promising a fifth installment to the zombie-killing franchise.
“This new ‘Resident Evil’ is the first one to ever open at No. 1 worldwide. It’s the biggest movie in the franchise,” Jovovich told Vulture. “So we’re definitely going to make another one.”
She said her husband, director/producer Paul W.S. Anderson, already has ideas for the fifth Resident Evil, but that they are interested in the audience’s input this time too. “We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It’s going to be a more interactive process,” she said.
It will be interesting to see if Anderson returns to direct after sitting out the middle two features with only writing and producing credits, or if the series will eventually shift away from Jovovich, who seems to be angling to be taken seriously with recent roles in Stone and Famke Janssen’s directorial debut Bringing Up Bobby. It’s hard to imagine a RE movie without her, but the same could be said for Kate Beckinsale in Underworld at one time.
The second installment was subtitled “Apocalypse,” the third tagged with “Extinction,” and the fourth is called “Afterlife.” Would it be too obvious to call the fifth Resident Evil: Resurrection? Rebirth? Or will those be saved for the inevitable franchise reboot? If the critics have their say, the promised sequel would be dubbed Resident Evil: It Just Won’t Die.
