‘Dragon Tattoo’ Star Rapace Joins ‘Sherlock 2′

Noomi RapaceNoomi Rapace, Swedish star of the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is making her first Hollywood movie and English-language debut in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 2.

Rapace’s role in the follow-up is unknown, as is the storyline for the next adventure, but THR‘s sources say she might be a French gypsy.  However, hints from the original suggest Holmes will face off against his archenemy, Moriarty, who has not been cast.  Ritchie’s wish list for the part included Daniel Day-Lewis, Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, and Gary Oldman.

The untitled sequel reunites Ritchie with Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as his mustachioed sidekick, Dr. Watson.  Rachel McAdams will return as Irene, but her role has been significantly reduced in the sequel.  Production should begin by the end of this year for a release on December 16, 2011 — ironically, a week before Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo remake (with Rooney Mara playing Lisbeth Salander).

Since signing for representation with UTA in August, Rapace has been taking a long list of meetings since arriving in Hollywood, including Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible 4, McG’s comedy This Means War, and Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, possibly alongside Jeremy Renner.  This Sherlock Holmes role is sure to be the first of many new deals for Rapace.
