Disney’s 3D Alice in Wonderland crossed the billion dollar worldwide threshold on Thursday to become just the sixth film in box office history. It has earned $332.4 million in the U.S. and a massive $667.7M overseas for Disney’s second-highest grossing film (behind Pirates 2)
If you count the movie as a non-sequel, it ranks third behind James Cameron’s Titanic and Avatar. Technically, the Tim Burton film is more of a live-action sequel than a remake of the classic story since the adult Alice is making her second trip down the rabbit hole.
3D accounted for 71% of ticket sales, so you can definitely expect more from the three-dimensional front as Disney prepares to mine more fairy tales for live-action remakes. The Mouse House is already working on a flesh and blood redo of Cinderella and Burton’s Maleficent, which re-tells Sleeping Beauty from the evil witch’s perspective.
