20th Century Fox has hired David Ayers to write and direct a remake of Commando, the 1985 action flick starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Deadline reports Ayer, who also wrote Training Day, is a former Navy soldier who will put a “real world” spin on the retired special forces commando battling to save his kidnapped daughter (played by Alyssa Milano in the original). His take will reportedly involve less brawny action set pieces and more covert, tactical operations.
The cinematic landscape has evolved so much in fifteen years, it’s hard to believe they’ll be able to capture the same fun as the original without appearing cheesy or over-the-top. Arnold’s corny one liners worked within the context of the decade and story. “I like you Sully. You’re a funny guy. That is why I am going to kill you last.” It’ll be difficult to capture a similar tone as the original — I bet they cast Dwayne Johnson — or try something new without ripping off Taken. I can see why they want to remake it, I just don’t have to like it.
Fox is already rebooting Arnie’s alien series with Predators, and remakes of Conan, Red Sonja, and Total Recall are in various stages of development.
