Alviiiiiiiiin! If it weren’t for Alvin and the rest of his chipmunk friends, there wouldn’t be this surge of hybrid live-action and animated films. Scooby Doo may have preceded it, and Roger Rabbit may have started it, but the Chipmunks and their “squeakquel” turned these type of kid flicks into easy money.
Next up on the adaptation wheel is Mighty Mouse, a superhero rodent who is “here to save the day.” Paramount, who turned Spongebob Squarepants into a hit movie, is turning the Saturday morning cartoon into a feature. The LA Times reported last week the studio is searching for writing talent to take on the iconic character.
Mighty Mouse was originally a satire of the superhero genre, and with Marvel and DC Comics assembling their massive slates of costumed characters the time is ripe for a comical look at modern comics. All though Kick-Ass accomplished this brilliantly, how about one for the kids? If that’s the case, they might want to leave out the ’80s episode where Mighty Mouse snorts a line of cocaine. Or was it “crushed flowers?”
Other cartoons headed for the big screen are Marmaduke, Yogi Bear, Smurfs, Tom and Jerry, Jetsons, and Popeye.
