Lucasfilm is developing a new, untitled animated Star Wars series intended as a comedic take on the characters from the massively successful sci-fi franchise.
Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, who have satirized Star Wars on their Adult Swim series “Robot Chicken” will have “creative involvement” in the animated show, along with “Daily Show” writer Brendan Hay. The animated comedy isn’t officially set up anywhere yet, but it’s expected to go to the Cartoon Network where Lucasfilm’s other animated series, “The Clone Wars,” is starting its third season this October.
Jennifer Hill (”The Backyardigans”) will produce and Todd Grimes (”Back at the Barnyard”) is signed to direct.
In quotes to the Hollywood Reporter, Green and Senreich said they hoped to “pull back the curtain on some of those behind-the-scenes shenanigans” and take a look at the “mundane, everyday problems” of the iconic characters. To the NY Times, Green called it a “sit-com set in the Star Wars universe.”
In addition “Clone Wars” and this freshly announced comedy series, Lucasfilm is also preparing a live-action series and is rumored to be working on an animated “Star Wars: Galactic Heroes” aimed at pre-school and kindergarten age children. If these make it to TV, there’s a potential for four different Star Wars-based episodic series at the same time.
Just stop it, George Lucas. Haven’t you made enough money with your disappointing prequels and endless supply of merchandise? Haven’t you exploited your fans enough? Don’t you have any creativity left? What’s next, Indiana Jones: The Animated Series?
This is such a colossally bad idea, I don’t even know where to begin. We may have chuckled at the mini “Robot Chicken” parodies or the “Family Guy” spoofs, but I can’t see people geeking out over a recurring version of this.
Who knows. Maybe there are people out there clamoring for Darth Vader going for laughs or Han Solo getting mixed up in wacky antics. Luke Skywalker has to figure out how to go on two different dates… at the same time! Han and Leia’s kid has trouble with bullies at school! Ewoks come to dinner and silliness ensues! Jar Jar Binks gets trapped in an elevator with a pregnant lady! Oh, the hilarity humanity!
