Tarantino Not Joining ‘Smurfs’ Cast, Who Is?

Published by Jeff Leins on March 12, 2010

Quentin TarantinoEarlier this week Alan Cummings spoke with MTV about his voice work as “Gutsy Smurf,” one of the CGI characters in the live-action/cartoon hybrid Smurfs movie.  At the time, Cummings said Quentin Tarantino was lending his signature voice for Papa Smurf’s right hand man, “Brainy,” but the filmmaker’s publicist has denied his involvement.

Neil Patrick Harris is playing a new human character that helps the Smurfs during medieval times.  Gargamel, the evil wizard nemesis, has not been cast but Cummings says the producers are working on someone “fabulous” for the part.

Singer Katy Perry is voicing Smurfette, Jonathan Winters is the aforementioned Papa Smurf, and George Lopez is “Grouchy Smurf.”  Raja Gosnell, known for such classics as Beverly Hills Chihuahua and the Scooby Doo movie, is directing.

This movie sounds smurfing lame, even with NPH on board.  As much as I love him, throwing Harris into a CGI setting spells bad news.  Take a look at Jason Lee or David Cross in those awful Alvin and the Chipmunks movies.  I’m not sure how Tarantino’s name ended up in the mix, but it looks like he dodged a bullet.
