Teaser Trailer for Disney’s Tangled

Published by Jeff Leins on February 28, 2010

The March 16 DVD/Blu-ray release of Disney’s The Princess and the Frog (which was excellent, by the way) will feature the first footage from their next non-Pixar project Tangled.  The 3D fairy tale was originally titled Rapunzel after its main character, voiced by Mandy Moore, but the Mouse House recently changed the name for unknown reasons.

Perhaps Disney was disappointed with Frog’s box office totals after the New Orleans musical made $102.8 million domestic on a budget of $105M, and Tangled is set to unspool on almost the exact same day a year later: November 24, 2010. Or some strange market research showed this appealed to a wider demographic than Rapunzel.

Like almost every debate on the Internet, there’s an online petition to have the name changed to its original title. I don’t know how much good it will do though, especially since an advertising campaign is underway. Oh, and it only has 420 signatures as of tonight.

Below is the 30-second teaser, which unfortunately doesn’t give us much of a glimpse at the visual style they’re trying to achieve (more on that here). Plus I’ve included the unbelievably boring title treatment. For a movie called Tangled, there’s not much tangle in that font (via Slashfilm):

    If anything...

I think they should use `Tangled`as a sub-name, kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean: the Black Pearl, that way people would know that there is more to the story then just `Rapunzel,Rapunzel let down your hair`, but at the same time i keeps it`s fairy tale roots and in addition is also respectful to Walt Disney and the Grimm Brothers, like it could be something like `Rapunzel: the tangled years` or `Rapunzel: A tangled tale of epic proportions` or `Rapunzel: prepared to get tangled` the options are endless, and in my opinion it`s a very ideal compromise.

I miss the title logo that Disney made for Rapunzel. But I have to admit, I guess Disney has a bad feeling that with that title Rapunzel, it may not get the boys interested (those boys need to "Dig a Little Deeper (according to the song from "The Princess and the Frog") on the synopsis, it is written for families not for just boys or girls). That is why they change the title to "Tangled." To tell you the truth, I find it misleading and disrespectful to the Grimm Brothers and to Walt Disney. Because during Disney's time, he never changes titles from famous fairy tales. I bet he does not care what the people say about fairy tale titles being too girlish. Because through Disney's experience, he knew that all fairy tales are written for families, not just for boys or girls, throughout the world. Does not matter what title it is called, as long as it is a family story.
