Joel and Ethan Coen have found their Mattie Ross, the young heroine in their remake of True Grit. Josh Brolin, Matt Damon, and Jeff Bridges are already on board the new adaptation of the Charles Portis novel.
After auditioning over 15,000 girls, according to Deadline.com, 13-year-old Hailee Steinfeld was selected for the key role. She has a few credits in short films, but her biggest part until now was playing “Little Girl” in an episode of Kelsey Grammer’s failed comedy “Back to You.” Wow, I forgot that show existed (barely).
The story centers on Ross’ determination to bring her father’s killer (Brolin) to justice. She hires U.S. marshal Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) to track the killer before a Texas Ranger (Damon) can find him. The original, starring John Wayne, focused more on Cogburn, but the Coens intend to stay more true to Portis’ book by making Ross the central character.
Is she the next Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, or Abigail Breslin?
