The Oscar-winning partnership of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are in negotiations to reunite with a first-look deal at Warner Bros.
Vulture says a final deal has not been reached and was uncertain on the length of the arrangement, but a formal announcement is expected within the next few days. Whether or not this means another collaboration like Good Will Hunting remains to be seen.
It’s also unclear if their production company would reform under a new name — their previous venture was called LivePlanet at Disney — and whether it would produce projects for each, or possibly both, of the Massachusetts-born friends. Like their earlier organization, it may end up being a place for the two to develop passion projects as producers like they did with the HBO series “Project Greenlight.”
This may also mean Matt may get a shot at directing like his pal Ben. He’s certainly trained under some of the best filmmakers working today from Steven Soderbergh, Paul Greengrass, Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Southwest Airlines’ favorite Kevin Smith, and even a film under the direction of Robert De Niro.
Meanwhile, Affleck would have a more solid foundation for his latest forays into writing and directing like his latest film The Town. His acting career definitely has some holes, but his work behind the camera thus far has been great.
Update: Deadline is reporting Damon and Affleck are possibly working together in The Trade, a film about the New York Yankees sex scandal in the 70’s based on Dave Mandel’s 2009 Black List script. Teammates Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich disclosed they were swapping wives and had fallen in love with each other’s spouses. Affleck is interested in playing Peterson and directing, while Damon would fill the role of Kekich. Will it matter that the two are die-hard Boston Red Sox fans?
