Oscar-winning actor Tim Robbins is joining the cast of Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern, the comic book origin story starring Ryan Reynolds, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, and Blake Lively.
Robbins will play Senator Hammond, the disapproving father of Sarsgaard’s villainous character Dr. Hector Hammond, according to the Heat Vision Blog. The rocky relationship causes plenty of angst for Hector, who later becomes infused with diabolical psychic powers. It’s a relatively small part, but one Robbins will likely knock out of the park. Hopefully, and this is just speculation, by casting a big name they’ll give him more to do in the inevitable sequel when Sinestro becomes the antagonist.
The actor was briefly rumored as Tony Stark’s father in Iron Man 2 flashbacks, but that possibility chipped away at the rock wall until it crawled to safety in a drain pipe. Then it assumed a fake identity and moved to the beach as a free man. ”Mad Men” actor John Slattery got the part instead.
The June 2011 release starts shooting next month in New Orleans.
