McG Directing Rom-Com ‘This Means War’

Published by Jeff Leins on: February 7th, 2010

McGMcG is in negotiations to direct This Means War for Fox, a romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Bradley Cooper.

The two stars and Terminator Salvation director are attached to a story about two best friends and spies who are in love with the same woman (Witherspoon).   The bond, disintegrates and a battle ensues, reports THR.  I think the thing I love most about rom-coms is that they’re so relatable.

Fox has apparently been trying to make this since 1998, bringing in talents ranging from Gore Verbinski to Martin Lawrence.

The reason why this shouldn’t be immediately discarded is because Tim Dowling wrote the recent draft.  He was responsible for the underseen comedy Role Models, which looked ridiculous at first but was surprisingly funny and sweet.  Netflix it.

Other than Halle Berry, Witherspoon might have the furthest fall from her Oscar win.  Since picking up the “Best Actress” statute for Walk the Line she’s done cheesy romances and an animated voice over.  I’m curious to see when she’ll return to quality films like Election and… well, I think that might be it.

McG’s scheduled recently cleared up when Disney shelved his remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a fifth Terminator is delayed indefinitely until the Halcyon Company can sell the rights amidst crippling bankruptcy.
