Disney Dreaming Up ‘Enchanted 2′

Published by Jeff Leins on: February 4th, 2010

EnchantedDisney’s Enchanted was a surprisingly pleasant experience, I suppose.  It was at the very least a clever way to revisit the classic Mouse House fairy tales by mashing together the animated and “real” worlds.  Of course, the studio isn’t accustomed to leaving their cute meta film alone.

Unfortunately for fans of the 2007 film, Disney is going with a different production team for a sequel.  Screenwriter Bill Kelly and director Kevin Lima have been replaced, presumably as they move on to bigger and better projects.  Though in Lima’s case that’s Candy Land: The Movie…

Variety is reporting Disney has hired director Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) and screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam, Fred Claus) to dream up another modern day fairy tale.  The studio is “hoping” to lure back the original cast of Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsy, James Marsden, and Susan Sarandon, meaning they aren’t contractually obligated for the sequel.

Spoilers if you haven’t seen the original:
The family flick was Adams’ breakout role and she’s since become a more bankable star, so Disney will have to up their asking price if they want to continue Giselle’s happily ever after.  As for Marsden, his Prince Charming plot could either be considered wrapped up in a new life or — and this is just my own speculation — his character could slide over into the starring position if Adams passes.  Sarandon is a replaceable villain because she fell from the Woolworth Building and disintegrated into magic dust.
End spoilers.

Disney hasn’t released a time frame for their return to Andalasia and no word on whether songwriting team Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz will be back either.  They had better start negotiating with Amy Adams immediately.

Amy Adams said she was contractually obligated to a sequel during the promotional tour for the original:

"MoviesOnline: Are you signed for a sequel?

AMY ADAMS: I believe that's in the contract."
