Clash of the Titans, Ghostbusters III in 3D?

Published by Jeff Leins on: January 21st, 2010

GhostbustersThe effects of Avatar’s massive box office success are already being felt through the industry as more executives consider 3D conversions for their slate of upcoming films.

Rumors that Warner Bros was looking to take the gamble surfaced last month when the studio ordered reshoots to fix some “creaky parts” in the Clash of the Titans plot.  Sam Worthington, who stars as Perseus, claimed an up-conversion to 3D was possible, which director Louis Leterrier later denied.

The Heat Vision Blog is now reporting WB has ordered at least a 3D test of the action epic that producers will screen and decided on in the next 10 days.  The process for converting a 2D movie into 3D takes time, so they’ll need to make a quick decision to have it ready by March 26.  They’ll also need to somehow secure 3D locations since DreamWorks Animation is releasing How to Train Your Dragon in the same format on the same day.

Buyer beware, if Warners does go with 3D it will not be a similar experience to Avatar, which was shot in stereoscopic 3D.  The extra dimension may also serve as a distraction for yet another troubled Leterrier production (he was the filmmaker in the latest Hulk debacle).

Speaking of stereoscopic, Columbia may be mulling over the technology for Ghostbusters 3, the sequel that will reunite Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and director Ivan Reitman.  According to Martketsaw, the cheerleader website for all things 3D, a source inside ILM (special effects company Industrial Light & Magic) says the movie is proceeding as planned and possibly with the extra dimension.  Take this with a grain of salt, the site has been known to be way off in the past and they’re more than a little biased towards the technology.

The latest Hulk "debacle" was actually pretty good. Looking forward to "Clash."

The production was reportedly a huge mess.
