Warner Bros may finally be developing a stand-alone feature film for their DC Comic book hero Hawkman, according to an inside source for Pajiba.
The studio describes the project as equal parts Indiana Jones, The Da Vinci Code, and The Ghost, which meshes about as well as naming three arbitrary movies in connection with a superhero property. My best guess is Carter Hall/Hawkman (actually an archeologist in the comics, so there’s that) travels to a tomb where he discovers ancient pottery crafted by two lovers in a passionate embrace that has historical significance about a secret society of superheroes. There, I just wrote the plot. You’re welcome, WB.
I’ve made my enthusiasm for the forgotten Justice League member known in the past. I mentioned the winged bad ass in my list of “Six Comic Book Characters Who Need Their Own Spin-Off,” as well as the personal pleas for a Hawkman movie every single time I wrote about the failed Justice League of America under Happy Feet director George Miller.
The rumor suggests WB may be quietly planning on once again trying a JLA movie, much like Marvel is slowly piecing together the Avengers. TV’s “Smallville” seems to be assembling the team in the meantime. Maybe Warners is simply moving on to the second tier heroes, like Green Lantern and Jonah Hex.
Right now we don’t know if a Hawkman movie is truly happening and DC Comics isn’t rushing to confirm the concept. Here’s what we do know: Hawkman is awesome. He has the abilities of a hawk… and a MAN! Does Spider-Man have wings made of special Nth metal? No. He’s merely a spiderman, not a hawkman. Sure, Iron Man can fly, but does he swing an ancient mace at people? Of course he doesn’t. The Hulk and Hawkman both have superhuman strength, but only one can converse with birds… Hawkman.
