‘Karate Kid’ Remake Trailer Fly Swats Nostalgia

Published by Jeff Leins on: December 22nd, 2009

Sony Pictures has released a trailer for 2010’s The Karate Kid, a remake of the classic 1984 film.  The Will Smith-produced redo stars his 11-year-old son Jaden Smith and the once-great martial arts master Jackie Chan, and it’s scheduled to bother fans of the original on June 11, 2010.

I’ve sufficiently decried the unoriginality of Hollywood and this particular ill-advised remake, so I’ll spare you the groaning.  I will point out The Karate Kid is a ridiculous title considering the character is learning kung fu from Jackie Chan’s Mr. Miyagi wanna-be.  Reason #538 why this is a bad idea.  (#537 is Chan uttering the phrase “jacket off.”)

The trailer spells out the basic plot: kid moves away from home, finds himself bullied, learns martials arts, and confronts his attackers in a sanctioned tournament.  It’s essentially the same movie, just in China, and with Chan wielding a fly swatter instead of chopsticks.

Take a look at the trailer below or over at Yahoo:

Put him in a body bag, Johnny!

Will Smith cast his own son? Wow that's nepotism at its finest. It's incredibly ridiculous how Hollywood recycles plots. In 20 years, we'll see Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and the Twilight Saga remade. Booo!

I "thrilled " how everyone has missed the point of the "Karate Kid". An where as I agree it should be retitled as the "Kung Fu Kid" , but ooh would you guys be hate'n on that title. I'll go see it as so will those of us who have practiced Martial arts for...many years, even before the first Karate Kid came out. Because Martial arts is not a sjill set it is a way of life and to watch a young person bloom with the potential they possess is magnificent.
