The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) has finally released their own iPhone and iTouch application. No longer will you need to navigate the website by thumbing down the page or zooming into the tiny search bar so you can settle a bet that Dustin Hoffman wasn’t in Star Wars.
After all the things IMDB founder Col Needham and his staff have done for me, the least I could do is plug their brand new application. Luckily the free download is exactly what it should be and a “must get” for movie fans.
The IMDB app — found simply by searching “IMDB” in the App store on your mobile device — harnesses their massive database of over 1.5 million movie and TV titles and 3.5 million celebrity profiles. The search ability is extremely fast and pulls up any matching titles or names that fit your query. Once you drill into a title, you can browse the usual information like pictures, release details, cast listings, and even watch the trailer if it’s available.
The main menu has a “coming soon” section to flip through the major releases headed to theaters (and their showtimes), box office numbers pulled from their acquired BoxOfficeMojo, the top 250 movie list decided by user votes, and the MOVIEmeter for rankings based on search results. It’s no surprise the Twilight Saga New Moon dominates that list, and seven of the top 10 on the STARmeter are Twilight actors.
“IMDB” is a bare-bones little application likely in its infancy (version 1.0.0), but at least there aren’t any annoying advertisements or the generally mean-spirited IMDB forums to worry about. Hopefully new versions will bring features like DVD details, user logins, and maybe even NewsDesk feeds. Check it out here.
