Major ‘Ghostbusters 3′ Spoilers from Sigourney

Published by Jeff Leins on: December 11th, 2009

Sigourney WeaverWhether or not Ghostbusters III is officially happening at Columbia Pictures is still a mystery, but the pieces have been slowly falling into place lately. “The Office” writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg were hired in September 2008 to take a shot at the script, which has reportedly seen several versions since.  Original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman agreed to produce in October, though he hasn’t decided on whether he’ll direct yet.

But before the sequel has the green light, Sigourney Weaver is already discussing details and whether or not she’ll be back for the third installment. In an interview with the UK’s Channel 4 (watch the embedded video clip below via AICN), Weaver tells the British reporter, “I’m afraid to say it [Ghostbusters 3] is happening, I hope people are excited about that.  I don’t know if I’m going to be in it, I have had a couple of calls asking ‘would you read the script…’  I might be in it; I see nothing wrong with being in it, although I don’t think I will have a big part. I think Bill Murray has a little more to do with it – he might be a ghost.

Dr. Venkman is a ghost!?  That might explain why Murray has been reluctant to agree to it, while the other original ‘Busters (Dan Akyroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson) are keen on their reprisals.

Wow, I really hope she is wrong because Bill Murray playing a ghost competes for lamest idea since Murray voicing Garfield. If this is true, they have managed to come up with a story even worse than supernatural goo smeared inside the Statue of Liberty.

However, if you re-read the quote above, Weaver doesn’t confirm she’s read the script.  She’s not even sure her character (Dana) is in the sequel, much less how big the role is.  Maybe she really doesn’t know.  Or maybe she was joking, poking the press for her own amusement.

GhostbustersIn the same Channel 4 talk, Weaver said, “My little son Oscar… I think he’s grown up to be a Ghostbuster.“  Come on, she has to be making this up.  In fact, a year ago Sigourney Weaver said something similar when she had only just “heard about [the sequel].”  In an interview with MTV in December 2008, Weaver hoped her little baby Oscar would be a Ghostbuster, even if she wasn’t in the movie.  Either that’s her sticking to a theory, or it’s a subtle confirmation of the one plot point.

Wild rumors about the sequel have surfaced before.  When Ghostbusters 3 started cropping up in headlines, the idea kicked around was a new squad was taking over the ghost busting business in a sort of torch-passing plot.  At the time, Apatow favorites (Seth Rogen, Steve Carell, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, etc.) were rumored to take the reigns, but each have shot down the possibility one by one.

That’s not to say there won’t be a new set of Ghostbusters.  Dan Aykroyd seems to think that element is “still in play” and even suggested a few female candidates for replacements, like Alyssa Milano (who does a voice in video game) and Eliza Dushku.

Here’s the interview with Sigourney Weaver:

What do you think? Bill Murray as a ghost?

  • I remember having read lots of spoilers on ghostbusters . com about three or four years ago, having quoted Dan Akroyd, saying that Ghostbusters had become an international franchise with multiple teams around the world. Furthermore, HADES is supposed to be the big bad guy. Hades has apparently been collecting souls for generations in order to take over the Physical Realm with his ghost-army.
On a side note: I have also read somewhere sometime that Bill Murray was reluctant to join the production, fearing that he would be too old to reprise his role as Peter Venkman, but now that technology and animation has become good enough he had agreed to voicing his role for a CGI Ghostbusters movie.

I would most definitely appreciate a life-action movie much more, but after having played the newest Ghostbuster videogame would still be very excited about seeing a CGI version. Either way, I am definitely very excited and incredibly anxious to see the final result and will be counting down enthusiastically when we finally hear release date.

I am researching everything about this movie with great interest and motivation and will update as soon as I found any more information.
  • Name
The quote, "he's a ghost," is not in reference to plot. It is referring to Bill Murray himself. Bill has in recent years, been notoriously difficult to get in contact with, and prior to 2008, very unwilling to allow his likeness in Ghostbusters related properties (remember "The Real Ghostbusters" cartoon). Apparently if your name is not Wes Anderson, Bill Murray does not return your phone calls. Hence, Bill Murray's involvement has more to do with the film going forward or not, rather than the specific plot. Without Bill Murray returning, all you have is a direct-to-video sequel, like the "other" American Pie movies.

Not necessarily. Bill Murray doesn't have to return for the movie to happen or be a success. Of course it would be nice and he's the core member of the team, but if they're truly planning on handing the business over to new Ghostbusters, then Murray isn't a "must have."

What do you think about Oscar growing up an becoming a 'Buster?
