Leona Lewis to Sing ‘Avatar’ Theme

Published by Jeff Leins on: November 16th, 2009

Leona LewisLeona Lewis will sing the theme song to James Cameron’s Avatar titled “I See You (Theme from Avatar)” and available on the soundtrack just days before the film’s release on December 18.  The rest of the music is being composed by James Horner (hear a clip here).

Lewis won the third season of the British talent show “X-Factor” in 2006, and her single “Bleeding Love” rose to the top of the charts in 20 countries including America.  I’m not that familiar with Lewis, but from the few clips I was able to find she has quite a voice.  I also learned she’s doing the theme to the new Final Fantasy game, a song titled “My Hands.”

Of course, the film song immediately brings back haunting memories of the overplayed Celine Dion song “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, Cameron’s previous film and the other time he collaborated with Horner.  Dion’s eardrum-assailant won an Oscar for “Best Original Song,” a Golden Globe, and a Grammy, and the single sold 10-15 million copies worldwide, so maybe I’m the only one who hated it.  Clearly 20th Century Fox and Atlantic Records are looking to replicate the success with Lewis.

For the Oscar, Lewis will be competing against Adam Lambart’s 2012 song “Time for Miracles,” Mary J. Blige’s song from Precious “I Can See in Color,” probably a song from Disney’s Princess and the Frog, a single from the newly-acquired Crazy Heart, and several from the musical Nine.  “I See You” will likely play out over the closing credits.
