Hugh Jackman has ruled out hosting the Academy Awards this coming March, despite rumors that he may return for another song and dance routine.
Sources for Variety say he’s “quietly” declined the job, while not ruling it out in future years. He just doesn’t want to be the guy two years in a row.
The Oscar telecast last February with Jackman saw an upswing in the ratings compared to the previous falling years, and started the series of changes the Academy has been making to the traditional awards show. No longer was a comedian hosting the gig, but an actor and rising member of the Hollywood elite.
This year the “Best Picture” category has been expanded to ten nominees, presumably to include more commercial prospects and bring in viewers hoping to see Pixar’s Up possibly contend for the top prize. Plus new producers like Adam Shankman could mean even more choreography in this years event. (Great, more gayness. They’re going to have to rename this the OscaAaAaArs!)
Speaking of which, Neil Patrick Harris seems to be the most popular rumor for his replacement, but Academy PR representatives are saying no host announcement is imminent. (Last year the host was named in December.) The odds from Vegas have Harris taking the job at 8-to-1. NPH has hosted the Emmys and Tonys.
As for the rest of the odds, Billy Crystal’s name is the safe bet for his ninth time on the stage. Is he even still relevant?
Now that Ricky Gervais is taken, I’d like to see George Clooney (he’ll probably be nominated instead), Stephen Colbert, Tom Hanks, or maybe Steve Carell. Who do you want to host?
