Tony Scott is attached to direct a film about Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the founder of the male erotic dance club “Chippendales.”
The story will follow the rise of Banerjee from operating a gas station to owning a chain of night clubs worldwide, according to Variety. Chippendales’ massive success in the 80’s made him incredibly rich, but a series of lawsuits and increasing competition made him paranoid. In the early 90’s Banerjee was convicted of conspiracy and attempting to hire a hitman to knock off former choreographers and dancers. Banerjee ultimately committed suicide in his cell before sentencing.
Scott is attached to a multitude of projects, so this likely won’t be his next. He’s currently directing Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Looking at his list of possible movies, Scott may never get around to the rigorous research he’ll need to do for this movie.
Side note: Scott also directed Top Gun, probably the most homoerotic movie this side of gay porn.
I thought about going as a Chippendale dancer for Halloween, but my tear-away pants are at the cleaners (again) and I lost one of my formal tuxedo cuffs. Now I’m considering going at one of the “Rescue Rangers,” which would make an infinitely better movie than one about a male strip club owner.
By the way, is anyone else really bummed that the two people in that picture, Chris Farley, and Patrick Swayze, are both dead? I know this might be a bit of a downer at this point, but here’s the SNL skit and my only real exposure to Chippendales (other than that one time we never speak of):
