District 9 Director Sets Next Sci-Fi Film

Published by Jeff Leins on: October 23rd, 2009

Neill BlomkampMedia Rights Capital has agreed to finance the next science fiction film of Neill Blomkamp, the fresh director that brought us District 9.  The untitled project will go into production in the middle of next year.

The amount he was given wasn’t specified, but Blomkamp will have more than the meager $30 million budget used for his feature film debut.

The good news is MRC sees the benefit of Blomkamp in his unique outlook on the world.  “MRC is letting me make the film I want to make, and that is by far the most important thing here,” Blomkamp told Variety. “The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, (one) that comes directly from me.” However, Peter Jackson will not be involved as producer this time.

If you’re hoping the lack of a title means a secret sequel, think again: “It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from District 9, but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm.” That doesn’t mean he’s not interested in eventually shooting a follow-up for Sony, but for now he’s writing and dreaming up special effects for this unrelated movie.

At Comic-Con, Blomkamp spoke of an original story he was working on that is set on another planet and will be “very violent, and very unique.”  It looks like he has the money to do it now.

  • awesome, dude's one for one so far, so i look forward to another unique vision.
