Bryan Singer May Return for More X-Men

Published by Jeff Leins on: October 11th, 2009

Bryan SingerBryan Singer, the director of X-Men and X2: X-Men United, is considering a return to the mutant franchise and has even discussed the possibility with 20th Century Fox.

“I’m still looking to possibly returning to the ‘X-Men’ franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it,” Singer said at a talk at South Korea’s Pusan International Film Festival.

He passed on shooting the third installment for the studio to focus on Superman Returns, but both comic book series’ suffered under the shift.  Singer was replaced by the marginally-talented Brett Ratner who ran the X-Men into the ground, and Singer’s own Superman was met with somewhat lukewarm reactions, though both could be considered a financial success.

Since his departure, the X-Men franchise has continued through spin-offs like Wolverine and other upcoming projects from Fox.  There have been reports of Singer “flirting with the idea” of directing X-Men: First Class, Fox’s attempt to start over with the backstory of Professor X and his school of mutant mastery.  The Wolverine sequel is also without a director, and could use someone like Singer after the shaky start.  “I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast,” he said at the same event.

It may end up being a scheduling concern at this point.  Singer is already on board for a Battlestar Galactica reboot, a remake of Excalibur, and a movie called Jack the Giant Killer that will re-tell the beanstalk story in a different light.  Of course, X-Men fans would love to see him do a third movie instead.
