‘Lieutenant’ Trailer is Crazier Than Nicolas Cage

Published by Jeff Leins on: October 9th, 2009

Millennium Films has released a general audience trailer for Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans made with the hands of wild filmmaker Werner Herzog and the even crazier actor Nicolas Cage.  It may not be as nutty as the unofficial trailer that made its way Internet-wide a few months ago, but it’s certainly an off-the-rails cop movie.

Then again, the 1992 original with Harvey Keitel wasn’t exactly tame either.  It was NC-17 when it hit theaters, one of the few to grab the rating for excessive drug use. This one has Eva Mendes in lingerie.

Reviews for this movie out of the Toronto Film Festival were mixed, mostly focusing on another strange performance by Nicolas Cage.  Entertainment Weekly’s review included the line, “The difference is that Cage is now doing his strenuous, bug-eyed intensity thing in character.” Cinematical’s take called it “a completely absurd performance,” I think in a good way…

Any way, I’m rambling, so here’s the trailer:

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is in limited U.S. theaters November 20, 2009.
