Patrick Swayze is Dead at 57

Published by Jeff Leins on September 20, 2009

Patrick Swayze After 20 months of battling pancreatic cancer, Patrick Swayze died Monday, September 14 at the age of 57.  According to his publicist, his family was at his side including his wife of 34 years, his brother Dan, and his mother.

Swayze was the star of 1987’s Dirty Dancing and romance classic Ghost both of which earned him an Golden Globe nomination.  He also played a lead in Red Dawn and Point Break.  Most recently Swayze starred in the A&E original series “The Beast,” which was not renewed for a second season.

He chose to announce his diagnosis in March 2008 and his continued treatment played out publicly, a rarity among celebrities but an inspirational struggle of hope and determination.

Because the disease does not cause symptoms until later stages, it is rarely diagnosed early and the treatment is extremely aggressive.  Swayze was treated for stage IV, the most widespread extent, while continuing to work.  According to the American Cancer Society, only 20% of pancreatic cancer patients survive for 1 year and 4% for 5 years.  It is the fourth largest cause of cancer death overall.  Hopefully his diagnosis, experimental treatment, and unfortunate death will bring more awareness to a particularly deadly condition.

I just watched Patrick Swayze on Dirty Dancing and my heart broke when I saw that beautiful man and the loss his family, friends and fans are experiencing when they watch his old movies. He is now with God, may he rest in peace and his memory will live on.

After reading several articles written by some of his fans, and I am one of them, very little I could add to those. I think he was a fine actor, with a very elegant presence, very handsome, with a lot of charm and a beautiful smile and tender facial expresion that reminded me of a beautiful child. I think we will never forget him ... Rest in peace in the presence of our Savior, Lord Jesus Christ!

I was 15 years old when I saw "Dirty Dancing" for the first time and have been a fan of Patrick Swayze ever since. It didn't matter what movie he was in... I had to watch it and knew it would be good. When I heard of Patrick's illness for the first time it just broke my heart. His way of always remaining positive, no matter how difficult things got shows a great deal about his character. Patrick was an absolute wonderful person on the set and off the set and will always be an inspiration to so many. May his family find peace knowing that he walks with God and smile down on them from Heaven as he suffers no longer.
  • Great actor sending our best to wife and family.

... it shows us how life is short....sometimes, like unfinished movies or songs...people born, live and left this world with the impression that something was missing.... uncompleted ....
...he was one of those people ....that just like the wind, have passed through our lifes.
...who once felt in love listening "she is like the wind" or cried seing "gost" understand the comments above.

....we will miss him. ...surely he is in heaven ...
