Resident Evil 5 May Be a Kind of Reboot

Published by Jeff Leins on September 8, 2009

Resident EvilFor fans of Milla Jovovich’s Resident Evil series, a fourth movie is already in pre-production that will bring original writer/director/producer Paul W.S. Anderson back to the mutant zombie hunter.  The 3-D movie is tentatively titled Resident Evil: Afterlife and scheduled for August 2010.

However, while that one is on the way Screen Gems is working on another story idea for a fifth movie possible called Resident Evil Begins.  According to Bloody-Disgusting, the plan is to do a sort of “quasi-reboot” that will retread the events of the original film where a special military unit fought an out-of-control supercomputer.

The movies were originally based on a video game series, which consists of five titles across multiple consoles.  The game’s producer has hinted at a complete reboot for the inevitable sixth game from Capcom.

In full disclosure, I’ve seen maybe four and a half minutes of Resident Evil, so I’m not going to pretend like I know or care what a reboot means for it.  My friend Mike loves ‘em though, so I’m sure he’ll be fist pumping at the possibility of a fifth.

The RE movie series mirrors the Underworld franchise in a way.  Both feature kick-ass female actresses who met their spouses on set while they were being directed by him.  Kate Beckinsale and Len Wiseman were married after the vampire films.  Jovovich is with Anderson, which might explain her continued involvement in the mutant movies.
