The Final Destination managed a repeat victory over the slow holiday weekend adding another $12.4 million to its total against three box office challengers (All About Steve, Gamer, and Extract). The horror sequel is projected to earn $15 million through Labor Day.
You know it’s a down weekend when a movie drops 55% and still wins. Aided by the premium cost of 3-D theaters (75% of its take from roughly 50% of its locations), the fourth Destination passed its $40 million budget into profitability well on its way to becoming the highest grossing title of the series. A second win even as the repetitive franchise runs out of steam into an inevitable formulaic sequel.
The Sandra Bullock/Bradley Cooper “comedy” All About Steve made $11.2 million in second, no where near the numbers put up by Bullock’s The Proposal and Cooper’s The Hangover earlier this summer. Variety says women over 25 turned out for this thing.
Why someone would want to watch another Sandra Bullock rom-com is beyond me, especially one where she intentionally plays the most annoying character in movie history. The unfunny flick posted 5% on RottenTomatoes, meaning only there were only 4 positive reviews out of 77. The IMDB rating from audience ratings continues to plummet at 4.6 out of 10.
Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds posted $10.8 million. It’s $91.7 million cumulative puts it on the cusp of overtaking Pulp Fiction for his biggest ever. The revisionist WWII film won the overseas box office.
Opener Gamer starring Gerard Butler made $9 million in fourth, which is typical for Crank directors Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine. If you like seizure cinema, this is your movie.
Last week’s second place newcomer Halloween II fell 66% to $5.6 million. Rob Zombie may be finished with Michael Myers, but the Weinsteins are planning Halloween 3-D.
In tenth was Mike Judge’s new comedy Extract with only $4.2 million. Judge has never been the box office darling, but it’s low for a movie with Justin Bateman, Mila Kunis, and Ben Affleck. In fairness, Miramax only booked 1,611 locations.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen crossed the $400 million domestic mark and is currently at $829 million. Those idiotic dollars add up.
3-Day U.S. Weekend Estimates:
1. The Final Destination $12.4 million
2. All About Steve $11.2 million
3. Inglourious Basterds $10.8 million
4. Gamer $9 million
5. District 9 $7 million
6. Halloween II $5.6 million
7. Julie & Julia $5.2 million
8. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra $5.1 million
9. The Time Traveler’s Wife $4.21 million
10. Extract $4.2 million
