‘Tron Legacy’ Date Challenges ‘Green Hornet’

Published by Jeff Leins on: September 3rd, 2009

Tron LegacyDisney has set a release date for Tron Legacy, the 3-D sequel to 1982’s science fiction classic.  The Mouse House is planning a December 17, 2010 opening, which means that weekend just got a little too crowded.

Meanwhile filming has commenced on The Green Hornet, Sony’s movie scheduled for the exact same date.  The studio announced their plans under a week ago to delay the Seth Rogen action comedy from July to December.  Now it looks like it will need to relocate again because it doesn’t stand a chance against Tron 2.  The lightcycle sequel is better suited for the “Avatar slot,” a nickname used by Rogen in his excitement over the shift.

Speaking of Hornet, Tom Wilkinson, David Harbour, and Edward James Almos have been confirmed for the cast.

Sony also has The Smurfs slated for the same weekend up against kiddie toon Yogi Bear.  There will definitely be some shuffling soon because those four are too big to occupy the same space.  My prediction is one cartoon (probably Smurfs) moving back to mid-March 2011 and Hornet trying to vying for a November spot.
