Rob Zombie’s Halloween II underperformed this weekend at the box office, grabbing only $17.3 million in third place. The slasher sequel placed behind the other Weinstein Company film Inglourious Basterds in its second weekend. The disappointing finish and Zombie’s move to other horror remakes means his “extreme vision” is complete, but the Weinsteins aren’t done with Michael Myers yet.
Taking a cue from Myers’ horror competition, The Final Destination, the series will be going 3-D next summer in yet another Halloween sequel. Halloween 3D will mark the eleventh entry to the overall collection.
According to the LA Times, Zombie is out and the Weinsteins are in negotiations with an undisclosed director. One who also has horror experience and will provide a “different take” on the franchise.
I can’t imagine who they’ve convinced to pick up the ball Zombie dropped two years ago and carry this madness on, especially in 3-D. This industry fad just won’t go away, not after the numbers the extra dimension is adding to studio returns. Many look at it and see a gimmick. Executives just see dollar signs.
