Three New ‘2012′ Posters Confuse Geography

Published by Jeff Leins on August 28, 2009

Sony has released three new posters for 2012, the latest disaster movie from Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, Godzilla, and The Day After Tomorrow).  The CGI-laden movie, starring John Cusack, is about the Mayan prediction that the world would end in the year 2012.

In case you missed the first one sheet, New York City fell into the sea.  Now the ocean is angry at Rio de Janeiro and Washington D.C., plus an earthquake rocked Los Angeles.  However, a closer look at the three new posters reveals some hilarious geography mistakes.  Take a look:

2012 - Washington DC

Emmerich sure loves to destroy the White House.  Not only that, but an aircraft carrier named the John F. Kennedy is headed for it… from the wrong direction.  This angle would mean the JFK warship would have been picked up in the Pacific Ocean and carried across the country to land on the White House.  Also, the Washington Monument is in the wrong place in relation to the President’s home.  At this angle, looking from the South Lawn, the monument would be behind you.  At least they added a little plane glued to the deck.

2012 - Rio de Janeiro

A wave rips through Rio de Janeiro, toppling its Chris the Redeemer statue.  Is anyone else disturbed by the idea of a giant Jesus falling and crushing people?  He’s literally diving into that crowd, possibly yelling “Geronimo!” or “Cannonbaaaaall!”  That or he’s got a big hug for those worshippers.  Oh, it should also be noted the city is in the wrong place and the ocean is attacking from the wrong side again.  Oops.

2012 - Los Angeles

This one isn’t as geographically incorrect as it is ridiculous.  A fault line rips a scar through Los Angeles for miles and the buildings are still standing? Besides, where’s the oceanic destruction from the East?

chill people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are just movie posters meant to grab your attention like Andrew said. Sure they are'nt entirely accurate but didn't they make you stop and stare? yes I admit, the "mistakes" are somewhat funny-(Good eye mate!) these were posted to make us laugh... so why not just laugh about them. As to the 2012 theory...I am a Christian and No one knows whats gonna happen, but I doubt it will be the end of the world beacause the Bible says that we will NEVER know when that time will come-yet we have this date picked out.... it just seems very unlikely...still, we don't know. That's the big mystery.
  • they said the world was going to end at the year 2000 long ago but now where still alive.there is nothing going to happen at 2012 its a lie.

i think everyonne, should start putting a part to helpp out the world, cuz we humands are the ones destroying everythinng so tht is why mayb the world wants to destroy us? each one of us needs to work hard to keep this our EARTh the place we have lived in Healthy!
  • did someone seriously just dis 'Inglourious Basterds' for being a historical joke? And I was so sure that Tarantino was going for realism.... So Hitler wasn't ACTUALLY killed by the Basterds in REAL life?
That was the best part of the movie! Screw the historical obligations.
  • sacccyind
JUST becuase you don't like emmerich you will keep finding fault in his everything people like a crap film like 'inglorious basterds' which is a HISTORICAL JOKE ATLEAST emmerich made a great film like the patriot.
  • Jeff Leins
Inglourious Basterds wasn't meant to be historical accurate. A crap film? Wow, ok. I don't hate Emmerich, in fact I enjoyed The Patriot and definitely Stargate.

No one finds these poster mistakes hilarious? The monument is in the wrong place!
  • jojojojojj
I think that it's hilarious! what kind of an idiot would direct a movie about the world ending, and then ruin by making some retarded mistake?
  • Me
You are making yourself out to be a whiner. Dont be the person who picks every little problem out just to find a reason to hate something you have not seen. It is the basis of ignorance and immaturity.
  • Jeff Leins
Wow, I hadn't realized pointing out glaring inaccuracies was now the basis for ignorance. How immature of me to notice new arrangements of national landmarks.
  • You hate it already because of the director. And seriously, while the monument behind the Whitehouse is goofy, who really cares what direction the ocean is coming from in a poster. It's eye candy, made simply to catch the EYE.
  • Jeff Leins
You're right, I don't like the director, but that doesn't make the posters any less laughable.
