McQuarrie isn’t new to the clawed character. The Oscar-winner (for The Usual Suspects) wrote a draft of X-Men for Bryan Singer, but took his name off the credits when the final product lined up more with David Hayter’s script.
An “easter egg” scene at the end of the original suggested an inevitable sequel was on the way, which was later confirmed by an announcement from producer/star Hugh Jackman and Fox. The quick clip showed the Logan character (Jackman) drinking in a Japanese bar, which hinted at the beloved saga created by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller and, of course, a continuation of the shirtless superhero.
Jackman confirmed this over the weekend when he picked up the Teen Choice surfboard for “Best Action/Adventure Movie.” He told the audience, “Who knows, maybe Wolverine will use one of these when he heads to Japan.” Backstage with MTV, Jackman clarified, “Japan is where we’re heading, [and] we’re starting to work on it now. We’re in the … first steps of developing that story.” Hopefully they’ll work out a better one this time…
In the Japanese saga, Wolverine learns how to control his rage through meditation and becomes a skilled fighter rather than a slashing lunatic. According to THR, Logan will focus on honor and respect through the way of the samurai. Then he’ll claw things.
It’s probably a bit early to be discussing villains, but ScreenRant put together a list of a few possibilities. Sabretooth is always an option, especially if Liev Schrieber has the usual multi-picture contract, but at this point the feral nemesis is played out.
Another potential baddie is the Silver Samurai, a mutant who can channel energy into anything, especially his trusty katana. Part of the Japanese saga involves Jackman falling for Mariko Yashida, the half-sister of the Silver Samurai, so it’s definitely on the table. I hope he says, “Hands off my sister or I’ll cut you.”
The other supervillain is Omega Red, a Soviet experiment gone wrong that resulted in a murderous, life-sucking beast man. As Rob from Screenrant points out, the Omega Red story involves an earlier mission by Team X, which we saw break up in the original movie. With some clever flashbacks and return mutant appearances, Wolverine could do battle with the tentacled serial killer and have a chance to see the old gang on set.
Who would you like to see Wolverine go head to head with in Wolverine 2?
