Spielberg Directing an Imaginary Rabbit in ‘Harvey’

Published by Jeff Leins on: August 2nd, 2009

HarveySteven Spielberg has selected his new job as director, a modern adaptation of Harvey for DreamWorks and Fox.

Originally a Broadway play about a man and his 6-foot, imaginary rabbit friend Harvey, it was made into a film classic in 1950 starring Jimmy Stewart.

Spielberg and Fox last collaborated on Minority Report in 2002.  Novelist Jonathan Tropper has written the new version for the screen and Spielberg is already considering casting to start shooting early next year.  Does this mean they’re checking the schedule of Tom Hanks?  USA Today reported the film could be in theaters by late 2010.

This clears up weeks of speculation over what Spielberg was working on next.  The busy filmmaker has “cracked the story” on Indiana Jones 5, continued to delay a biopic of Abraham Lincoln, considered a Martin Luther King Jr. film, and threatened fans with a remake of Oldboy.  He also attached himself as producer to a possible Matt Helm franchise.
