SDCC: Tron Legacy Viral Event Details, Concept Video

Published by Jeff Leins on July 24, 2009

After last year’s Dark Knight scavenger hunt, Disney brought clever viral marketing back to Comic-Con.  Earlier this week they started mailing out gold arcade tokens that read “Flynn’s Arcade” and “Home of Tron” on them.  When the convention got underway in San Diego, they started handing them out to eager fans.  Then, hours after the Disney panel in Hall H promoting Tron Legacy, the studio unveiled a working “Flynn’s Arcade.”

At around 9:30, the handed out packets and instructions on how to find coordinates.  By using a black light on 15 different posters around the Gaslamp Quarter, the teams were able to fill in a grid which led them to the location.  Inside were rock ballads and retro games, including old school arcade machines like Pac Man and Asteroids.  Eventually crowds were lead through a secret door to a back room which contained an actual Lightcycle.  Take a look at two pictures below from Collider.com (there are more over there).

Veganboy from our comments section said Garrett Hedlund, one of the stars of the movie stopped by and Milo Ventimiglia from “Heroes” showed up to see what was going on.

At the panel, Disney also played the video from last year’s Con (now in 3D) and with the new Tron Legacy title tagged on the end.  Luckily, you don’t have to watch it in grainy YouTube quality anymore!  The video is posted on the viral site FlynnLives.com and it’s pretty amazing.  It’s only test footage, but it will show you what we have in store for us sometime (probably late) next year.
