‘Book of Eli’ Poster, Trailer and Script Details

Published by Jeff Leins on: July 23rd, 2009

Book of EliThe websites crawling through the crowds at Comic-Con have snapped a few pictures of the new Book of Eli one sheet hanging at the convention center.  It features star Denzel Washington walking in a post-apocalyptic world with just a pack and the clothes on his back.  The poster actually reminds me a little of Will Smith’s I Am Legend.

Directed by Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes (From Hell, Dead Presidents), the story centers on a man (Washington) protecting a sacred book that contains answers to saving America.  A villain named Carnegie (Gary Oldman) seeks out Eli to capture it and sends his main goon (Ray Stevenson).  Along the way he picks up a young female sidekick (Mila Kunis).

Update2: The trailer was just released on Apple.com and has clips of Washington kicking some ass.

ScriptShadow has an early look at the script, which sounds pretty awesome.  Eli “wandered out of the Old Testament” and into this dystopia.  Oh, and he carries a samurai sword and a shotgun.  The general feeling from the article is the script needs work from its first draft to move the story along, but there are some thematic elements under the surface of the simple actioner and apparently the ending is epic.  The review contains spoilers, so read at your own risk.  Update: Unfortunately, the script review was removed by Warner Bros today.

Also, I wanted to quickly mention Denzel Washington has officially signed for Unstoppable after a salary dispute and departure earlier this month.

Book of Eli is out January 15, 2010.  Don’t forget to check out the poster pictures below from Empire and Collider:
